Low Emission Zones in Spain – How Do They Affect You?

From January 1st, 2023 every town and city with more than 50,000 inhabitants must introduce Low Emission Zones which will prevent many cars from driving in their town or city centres. This will affect nearly 4 million cars in 150 towns and cities in Spain.

To be able to drive in these zones you will need an eco sticker for your vehicle. In Spanish it is called El Distintivo Ambiental DGT. If you go into one of these areas without a sticker you will be fined.

There are 4 types of stickers depending on how pollutant your vehicle is.

It is easy to find out which sticker you need. Go to the DGT website, input your vehicle registration number and click Consultar. Here is the link: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/vehiculos/distintivo-ambiental#

You can buy your sticker online from Correos. It costs 5€ + 2,99€ postage. You have to fill in your vehicle registration number and the NIE/DNI of the owner of the vehicle and also upload a copy of the Permiso de Circulación and the NIE/DNI of the owner.
